Meet coach jess
Commonwealth silver medallist Jess Gordon-Brown brings experience across gymnastics, judo and Olympic weightlifting to Youth Strength Academy. With more than 10 years of coaching experience, she helps athletes develop strength, movement skills and an understanding of how those foundations support their sport.
From gymnastics to weightlifting
Jess began her sporting journey in gymnastics, becoming a two-time National Acrobatic Gymnastics Champion. In 2011, aged 16, she moved into judo, where she went on to earn two national medals.
She discovered Olympic weightlifting in late 2017, taking the strength, coordination and body awareness developed through her previous sports into a new competitive challenge.
Her weightlifting career has since taken her onto the international stage, representing Great Britain at senior level.
Commonwealth success
One of Jess’s biggest achievements came at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she won silver for England in the women’s 59 kg weightlifting category. It was a memorable milestone in a sporting journey that has spanned three competitive disciplines.
Her experience gives her an understanding of the commitment, practice and technical development involved in learning a sport and competing at a high level.
Strong foundations across sports
Alongside her competitive background, Jess has experience in rock climbing, boxing and parkour. This variety has shaped her understanding of how physical skills transfer between sports.
Shoulder mobility, strength and core tension are particular areas of focus. Jess recognises how developing these foundations can support athletes across different activities, drawing on the principles that have helped her progress in her own training.
Sharing her experience through coaching
Jess teaches gymnastics, judo and Olympic weightlifting, combining more than a decade of coaching with her experience as an athlete.
Her coaching also includes Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics for CrossFit and general gymnastics skills. At YSA, she brings that breadth of knowledge to our young athletes, helping them build physical foundations they can use throughout their sporting journey.
