Meet coach rupe
Former professional ice hockey player, strength and conditioning coach and founder of Youth Strength Academy, Rupert Quiney brings sporting experience and a strong grounding in sports science to his coaching.
Known to our athletes and families as Rupe, he created YSA to give young people access to structured physical preparation, helping them build strength, learn how to train and feel more confident in their abilities.
From professional sport to coaching
Rupe’s background in professional ice hockey gave him first-hand experience of the physical demands of competitive sport. Since beginning his coaching career in 2014, he has committed himself to understanding how training can support people across different ages, abilities and sporting backgrounds.
He holds an MSc in Strength and Conditioning from the University of Chichester, completed with Distinction, and a BSc in Sports Science (Human Performance) from University Centre Farnborough, achieved with First Class Honours.
His coaching experience includes work with the Guildford Flames, regional strength and conditioning within English ice hockey, and the Halow Project’s Building Futures programme. Across these environments, adapting training to the individual has remained central to his approach.
Why he created Youth Strength Academy
YSA began with Rupe’s desire to help young ice hockey players physically prepare for the demands of their sport. He recognised that limited access to training facilities, education and specialist coaching was a challenge facing young athletes across many sports.
That idea grew into an academy where young people from different sporting backgrounds could train together, develop their physical skills and learn to use the gym with confidence.
Today, YSA supports young athletes in Bracknell and Guildford, with coaching that progresses from playful movement fundamentals to structured training and preparation for competition.
Building confidence through understanding
Rupe believes strength and conditioning should be accessible to everyone, whatever their training experience or starting point.
His qualifications in personal training, exercise referral and adapting fitness instruction for adolescents reflect that commitment. His approach combines sports science with practical coaching, helping athletes understand their training and gradually take greater ownership of their development.
At YSA, this means giving young people the foundations to approach new movements and challenges with confidence, while adapting sessions to their stage of development.
A vision beyond the gym
For Rupe, coaching is about helping people build the skills and confidence to keep progressing. That belief sits at the heart of Youth Strength Academy: giving young athletes access to knowledgeable coaches, a supportive training environment and physical preparation that serves them across sports.
From their first session to preparing for a higher level of competition, Rupe’s aim is to help every athlete understand what they can do and build on it.
